| Anhui
briefing | Anhui,
also known as Wan for short, is located in southeast China, on the lower reaches
of the Changjiang (Yangtze) River. It touches six provinces, including Shandong,
Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hubei, and Henan, with the Changjiang and Huaihe Rivers
running through. Anhui has an area of 139,000 square kilometers, and a population
of 60 million. Hefei is the capital. The topography in Anhui is high in the
southwest and low in the northeast. Mountains and hills make up two thirds of
the total area. The climate belongs to semi-humid monsoon of warm temperate and
subtropical humid monsoon. Anhui has abundant tourist resources with beautiful
landscape, many places of historic interest, and rich folk customs. The most famous
scenic wonders include Mt. Huangshan, Mt. Jiuhua, Mt. Tianzhu, Mt. Langya, and
Mt. Qiyun, all of which are national scenic spots. In 1990, U NESCO put Mt. Huangshan
on the list of the World Cultural and Natural Heritages. Other tourist attractions
are the Xin'an River, Taiping Lake , and the Water Park on Chaohu Lake. Anhui
is propitious for giving birth to great men, including Laozi, Zhuangzi, Guanzi,
Cao Can, Hua Tuo, Bao Zheng, Zhu Yuanzhang, Wu Jingzi, Chen Duxiu, and Hu Shi.
It has three state-level ancient cultural cities, including Shexian, Shouxian,
and Bozhou, and six nature reserves. The long history has left behind a great
number of historical sites, such as Xuguo Stone Arch and Tangyue archways in Shexian,
the ancient residences in Yixian, and the opera theaters in Bozhou. Moreover,
Anhui is famous for arts and crafts, four treasures of the study, iron pictures,
and bronze wares. Anhui is proud that three of its cities, including Hefei,
Huangshan, and Bozhou, have been listed among the first group of Top Tourist Cities
of China. Anhui has a convenient transportation. It is only a 45-minute
flight from Shanghai to Huangshan. Regular flights shuttle between Anhui and major
cities such as Beijing, Guangzhou, and Van, and Hong Kong as well. Rails link
the province with the rest part of the country. To offer more convenience for
tourists, 15 cable ways have been established. | | Memorial

Huangshan Scenic Zone | A
major international tourist city in south Anhui, Huangshan is noted for its statuesque
mountains and rich cultural heritage. It was also the cradle of one of China's
three local academic schools, the school of Anhui studies. Under the jurisdiction
of Huangshan are the national scenic resorts Mount Huangshan and Mount Qiyun,
the famous historical and cultural city Shexian, and four key cultural relics
under state protection (Xu Guo's Stone Archway, dwelling houses at Qiankou, the
group of archways in Tangyue, and the temple dedicated to Luo Dongshu), and such
scenic resorts as Xin'an River and Taiping Lake. Lauded as "No.1 Mountain
under Heaven", Mount Huangshan is one of 10 major scenic resorts of China.
In 1990 the UNESCO put Mount Huangshan on its list of world natural and cultural
heritages. The beauty of Mount Huangshan lies in its "four wonders":
pine tees with shapely foliage, rocks in a hundred and one images, an ocean of
clouds, and hot springs. Eight tourist zones with 400 scenic spots have been established
in the mountain, and a number of star-rated hotels and other facilities (including
three cableways) built for sightseers and holidaymakers. Huangshan Airport operates
flights to many cities. The annual Huangshan International Tourist Festival takes
place in October. | | Taiping Lake | The
Taiping (Peace) Lake is located at the southern foot of Mt. Huangshan and to the
southeast of Mt. Jiuhua, with an area of some 88 square kilometers, and the water
of 40 meters deep. It is the largest man-made lake in Anhui Province. There are
more than 10 islets of various shapes in the lake. Tea trees and simple-styled
residences laid with bricks and with painted walls are reflected in the mirror-like
lake, which is dotted by sails of fishing boats and bamboo rafts. The lake
is home to many wild animals, such as river deer, deer, and rabbits. Recently,
tourist attractions including a Deer Island, a Monkey Island, an Egret Oasis,
and ponds for snakes and crocodiles have been established in the lake. The lake
